The Asaro Mudmen of Papua New Guinea have some terrifying masks
La belleza de los pueblos indígenas. - Fotografía.
Malagan (a.k.a. Malanggan) ceremony, New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. The ceremony has its roots in funerary rites, but the ceremonies take several days and cover an enormous amount of social and political territory in the process. Malagan masks are now world-famous. Traditionally these were burnt at the conclusion of the event; in modern times most are now retained, as the carving tradition is now only known by a few. Photo ©Chris Rainier
