Winchester M1873 Musket- Like preceding Civil War era muzzleloaders, this Winchester features an angular bayonet to go along with its 30" round barrel. While the lever-action design never received serious military consideration in this country, other nations like Turkey a& Russia were to order thousands of Winchesters. The .44 WCF cartridge that our example is chambered for was one of the most popular rounds for rifles & handguns during the frontier period. National Firearms Museum…

Spencer Rifle – This was one of the metallic cartridge repeaters that changed the face of the Civil War. Fitted with a 7-shot tubular magazine that was housed in the buttstock, the M1860 Spencer rifle fired a .56-56 (.52 ca) rimfire cartridge. Later in the war, the Union purchased Blakeslee cartridge boxes that could hold pre-loaded tubes filled with ammo. 7, 10 and 13 tube Blakeslee boxes were offered, but the combined weight of 91 Spencer rounds made the biggest size a little unwieldy.

Hall Breechloading Flintlock Rifle- The iron mounts (and barrel) of this M1819 flintlock Hall rifle are coated with a durable brown lacquer that provides a distinctive color. This lacquer helped protect from rust and was found to be faster to apply than a blued finish. On a piece like the Hall – made from 1819 up to 1840, this innovation probably helped in the production of the nearly 20,000 Hall flintlock rifles made at Harpers Ferry Armory. Brophy Anti-Tank rifle - During the Korean War, Major Bill Brophy took a captured Russian PTR anti-tank rifle, mounted a Unertl telescopic sight and a .50 BMG barrel, and he then had one long distance sharpshooting rifle. Today this single-shot is a long ways from the Chosin Reservoir, but come by and see it at much closer range at the NRA’s National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, VA.
