NJ Gov. Chris Christie signed “Patrick’s Law” (S1303), which upgrades the failure to provide an animal with necessities like food/water to a 4th-degree crime If the dog dies, it becomes a 3rd-degree crime. Increases animal-abuse fines from $1,000 to $3,000 for a first offense, and from $3,000 to $5,000 for a second offense. Anyone convicted of overworking an animal will be charged with a disorderly persons offense, be fined between $250 and $1,000, and serve up to six months’ jail time.
