This is a detail of the left underarm gusset. There is a separate piece sewn into the middle of the gusset. This seems like a strange place to wear a hole and likewise seems like a strange place to have a hole in a scrap of linen if you are piecing. The linen of the patch is made of a much finer and whiter linen than the rest of the shirt. — with Tony Holbrook at Department of the Geographer to the Army, 1777-1783.
