This medallion came to the Museum along with 23 other smaller discs (reg. nos 1851, 4-14, 2 A to N), also with shields, and a buckle (reg. no. 1851, 4-14, 3), all on a French velvet belt. 8 plaques were destroyed in World War II. All the smaller discs follow the same format - a shield on a blue enamelled ground with gold scrolls. They were probably intended for attachment to a leather belt.     Made in France    14th C

Branko belt, late Byzantine: Belt in the form of a long embroidered strip, the surface almost covered in couched silver threads; cut ends; design of three repeating motifs in 18 ogival quadrilobal frames: a) a crested helm with mantling, the crest the upper half of a bear, accompanied by an inscription reading "Branko"; b) a falcon; c) a wyvern with twisted tail; between the frames, a lion's mask, and at the sides, stylised leaves;  British Museum  Registration number: 1990,1201.1
