Fern fiddlehead (Sadleria cyatheoides), Kilauea, Hawaii

During hikes around Kilauea there were many places with large ferns, some of which had new growth--fiddleheads. Many of these were about head hight--2 m (~6+ ft).

Fern fiddleheads

Fern leaves often unroll themselves as they mature. The result, while they are still wrapped around themselves, is called a fiddlehead. Here's my fern set, which, unfortunately, doesn't have any photos as good as these! (It's mostly not of fiddleheads.)

The ingenious ways plants disperse their seeds

Maple Tree seed pod..we used to call them "wings" as children, because of the way they flew to the ground.

Decaying Leaves — I was shot by Billy Kidd

Research (Not my photo): I really love how the light is predominantly focused on the style of the leaf. It's the only thing you are able to see and the photographer has made it his or her intention to bring out the curvature and detailing with his/her use of light. I may apply this to my own photos and signify it to an image such as this. It's very shell-like and subtle. Beautiful photograph!
