Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), sometimes referred to as Stone Man Syndrome, is an extremely rare disease of the connective tissue. A mutation of the body's repair mechanism causes fibrous tissue (including muscle, tendon, and ligament) to be ossified when damaged. In many cases, injuries can cause joints to become permanently frozen in place. Surgical removal of the extra bone growths has been shown to cause the body to "repair" the affected area with more bone.

Prodigies by James G. Mundie - Portrait of Lazarus and Joannes Baptista Colloredo
The Italian Colloredo brothers were favorites at the court of Charles I of England. Lazarus was a handsome & popular man, but his attached brother was little more than an unconscious dangling entity. Lazarus would walk the streets with his voluminous cloak draped over his brother so as not to cause unwanted attention. At other times, Lazarus would invite spectators to pinch his brother to hear him cry out with involuntary nonverbal protestations. This cruel behavior was a popular pastime.
