This dress coat of a captain or commander shows the impact of contemporary fashions on uniform. The front is cut straight across in the cutaway style. The lapels are still working, but by this period it was the fashion to stitch them down so they could no longer be unbuttoned. The buttons feature the crown over the fouled anchor which was introduced with the 1812 regulations. Finally, the pocket flaps are non-functional and completely decorative as the pockets are now located in the tails.

This seaman’s hat and waistcoat from the early 19th century is the newest addition to our Well-Dressed Men Royal Navy Uniforms Extant Garments album. It is probably an example of “shore-going rig”, as regular seamen had no set uniforms until later in the century.
