I wanted to list some of my favorite restaurants that I’ve found in Alicante, Spain, during my semester abroad with CEA Study Abroad! Although many days I shopped at the Mercadona or Corte Ingles for my groceries, sometimes I explored what Alicante’s restaurants had to offer. Of course, there are the well-known tapas that Spain is notable for, but I also found other types of cuisine.

For one of our last excursions, CEA took us to the island of Tabarca off of Alicante! With only 30 people inhabiting the island, the island doesn’t take long to walk through. We began our day by meeting at the port where our Kontiki boat picked us up! The boat trip is about 45 minutes long, and we sat on the top of the boat to overlook the Mediterranean sea below us.

The education system in Spain has many differences from the education system in the United States. Before choosing your study abroad program, it is important to know what your program offers and how the host university works with its students.

Alicante taught me to appreciate the little things (that are actually the most important things) in life.

As a freshman in college, I knew that I wanted to travel and expand my horizons, but I wasn’t sure if that meant an entire semester away from home. I wasn’t too nervous until I found out I was the only student from my school studying abroad in Alicante, Spain -- would I meet any friends? Could I travel across the world by myself? Do I have enough money to support myself? Whatever your concerns may be, if you’re on the fence about studying abroad, here’s why you should.

Here are a couple of my favorite places in and around Alicante during my summer studying abroad there with CEA.

I am a Latina, born and raised in the Dominican Republic, who moved to the United States in 2010. My heritage means that I am considered a minority within the study abroad community, since only 10.6% of study abroad students identify as Latinos/as. I chose to study abroad in Alicante, Spain, with CEA Study Abroad.

If Alicante sounds unfamiliar to you, don’t feel ashamed or uncultured. The name did not ring a bell to me initially, and I had never met anyone who had traveled there. Despite this possibility, I invite you to learn about all the beautiful things Alicante has to offer when deciding where to study abroad!
