Six Things You Can Do To Get Ready for the Fall Feasts

It's beginning to feel - just a little - like autumn. As the transition from summertime to the fall happens there is an undeniable excitement in the air. While most of the country would say that's because of pumpkin spice lattes, football season, and cozy sweaters, I can't help but see that the Creator intended this autumn anticipation to be for his set apart times. Yom Teruah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot are coming up soon. Those ten days were created for spiritual significance and also as a…

land of honey: The Meaning of Yom Teruah

The Meaning of Yom Teruah

Ever wondered about Yom Teruah? It is the set apart time of YHWH that lands on the first day of Scripture's seventh month. It translates something like Day of Sounding or Day of Awakening Blasts. You've probably heard it called the Feast of Trumpets, which is a pretty good name but it doesn't quite describe the full meaning of the word. Let's delve a little more into the meaning of 'teruah' to get a better idea of what this set apart time of YHWH is. If we read Scripture in Hebrew, 'teruah'…

Significance of the Shofar During Yom Teruah

From Hebrew Yom Teruah translates as Day of the Sounding or Day of the Awakening Blasts. The sound in question coming from shofars (Vayikra 23:23). For this reason Yom Teruah is also referred to as the Feast of Trumpets. What is a shofar? It's a musical instrument that is made out of ram's horn. They come in many sizes and, when played by someone who knows what they're doing (read: not me), they make a lovely sound. While they aren't heard or seen much outside of Hebrew circles, occasionally…

Upside Down Apple Cake

Update on 4/20/2020: I've removed the 2 tablespoons of butter from the batter, raised the baking temperature to 320 F, added a 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the batter. The baking time was originally 300 F however if you prefer to bake a this temperature then add another 5 minutes or so to the baking time.I recommend using apples on that are tart or slightly tart to balance the sweetness of the cake, but any apple will work with this recipe.I also use a mandonline to slice the peeled apples, but…

Recipe for Rosh Hashanah: Apple Butter Challah

I have never met a challah I did not like. There is simply something magical about the puffed, egg-enriched loaves that sit at the center of many Jewish holiday meals and that make an extravagant base for French toast. And yet as a kid, I would count down the days to Rosh Hashanah when my mom would bring home challah baked specially for the holiday.
