Enxó (Hand Adze)
Once commonly used in many cultures, the hand adze is a versatile tool useful to sculptors, carpenters, boatbuilders, millwrights, or anyone else who needs to shape wood. Spoon carving edge tools need to be sharp. To be quite honest I am relatively new to using this type of stropping system. I have always used a bit of end grain to sort out my foil edge after sharpening, or perhaps a leather belt with a para-cord loop at each end held taut between foot and left hand. Then i attacked it with the Adze and gouges, got a lovely deep and smooth bowl carved out in next to no time, the new Hans Karlsson Dog Leg gouge i bought in the week made life very easy when it came to carving the bottom of the bowl, having…

Right hand photo has the pith on the front of the spoon, at left it’s at the back. What do you think about the different grain pattern? Are there issues with relative strength of the bowl? I found the one on left more difficult to carve and get a decent finish on. Admittedly they are from a branch of semi…
Lee Valley Tools
For carving or similar work, these guards provide protection from minor cuts and slivers, and are less restrictive to wear than gloves. Hand made in France, each set includes three elastic-backed guards designed to fit on two fingers and a thumb. For glove sizes up to women's large or men's medium, choose the small guards, and for sizes larger than men's medium, choose large. As with other leather items, their suppleness increases with use.
