Juan Gris, Breakfast, 1914. Cut-and-pasted paper, crayon, and oil over canvas, 31 7/8 x 23 1/2 in (80.9 x 59.7 cm). Museum of Modern Art - New York. Gris, an example of a Cubist, not only simplified shapes into larger more dominant areas, but gave each shape a characteristic value, producing a carefully conceived light-dark pattern. He also made use of open-value composition, where the value moves from one shape into the adjoining shape, as can be seen in this example.
