Fifth Grade Multicultural Milk Jug Masks

Why have human beings, in many diverse cultures throughout history, made masks? Why do we do so today? Fifth Graders viewed a large variety of multicultural masks asking this very question. Students carefully observed each mask, searching for interesting shapes, lines, and features to sketch in their art journals. Kids noticed such things as: Abstracted, exaggerated features…

Marvelous Multicultural Milk Jug Masks

Recycled materials make for exciting art possibilities! Fifth graders used plastic milk jugs to create masks inspired by those of other cultures. First we collaged tissue paper onto the surface. Milk Jug Masks

This is a project that I did with one of the elementary schools I taught at. I always start my lesson out with a power point that talks about the environment in some way just to make them think more about the materials they are using and the fun things they can create with recycled materials. The great part is the no cost supplies, I just had the kids bring in their empty milk jugs, newspapers, and paper towel and toilet paper rolls from home. It didn't take long to get what we needed for…

Recycled African Masks

I love giving my recycled art classes during the summer. I hoard during the school year in hopes of having enough egg cartons, paper tubes, straws, or whatever I might find interesting to have enough for a group class. I saw examples of these African inspired masks at Fem Manuals, one of my favorite art sites ever! They always have incredibly creative projects, recycle often, and really capture the adventure that their young artists are constantly having. Our masks are created using recycled…
