Spotted Hyena at Dawn

On an early morning game drive, we saw this young spotted hyena in the far distance. He seemed curious, and started walking towards us. He was even polite enough to cross the road and relax in the better light.

The spotted hyena is a highly successful animal, being the most common large carnivore in Africa. Its success is due in part to its adaptability and opportunism. It is primarily a hunter but may also scavenge, with the capacity to eat and digest skin, bone and other animal waste. In functional terms, the spotted hyena makes the most efficient use of animal matter of all African carnivores.

Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena): though dog-like in appearance & some behavior, hyena are not canids. They are in the feliforma family & are related to civets & cats. The striped hyena is probably the most attractive of the 4 species of hyena

striped hyena [previously pinned by Mary Horn to one of my former boards, Miscellaneous Marvelous Mammals;] Hyenas are more closely related to felines although they look as if they are closer to canines.
