P/O Julian Kowalski (front) was posted to No 302 Squadron RAF at RAF Leconfield on 26 July 1940, 16 days after the first Polish fighter squadron had been formed. On detachment to operate with the Bader Big Wing at RAF Duxford from 13 September, the 30-year-old Pole flew Hurricane Mk I WX-D, whilst claiming a probable Do 215 southeast of London and a Do 17 damaged over northern London on 15 September, and a Ju 88 over Mildenhall 4 days later before returning on 25 September.

P/O Julian Kowalski (front) was posted to No 302 Squadron RAF at RAF Leconfield on 26 July 1940, 16 days after the first Polish fighter squadron had been formed. On detachment to operate with the Bader Big Wing at RAF Duxford from 13 September, the 30-year-old Pole flew Hurricane Mk I WX-D, whilst claiming a probable Do 215 southeast of London and a Do 17 damaged over northern London on 15 September, and a Ju 88 over Mildenhall 4 days later before returning on 25 September.

With their attachment ceasing 7 days later, the 34-year-old pilot became non-effective sick after a patrol on 19 October but succeeded acting S/L Mieczysław Mümler on 31 December.
