June 27th has been designated as National PTSD Awareness Day. The day is intended to increase awareness about PTSD and help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The legislated date is the birthday of Staff Sgt. Joe Biel, who suffered from PTSD after serving two tours in Iraq. Unfortunately, Staff Sgt. Biel took his own life. The DoD reports that the VA has treated more than 217,000 veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq for PTSD, with many cases of PTSD unreported.
