My Reading Stamina Anchor Chart (Created with the children during the second week of school.) Creating Readers and Writers Blog Post

Andrea Knight - Teacher · Learner · Author

It's spring cleaning time in my classroom (are you in that mood, too?) and I'm sorting through all of my anchor charts, taking some down to make room for others and deciding which ones to pass on to my intern. (She graduates from USF next month... yay, Laura!) So I took a picture of each one just in case I need to make it again and need a little inspiration. I'm posting them here in case you're visual like me and like to collect ideas for your anchor charts. They're random and in no…

Making Seed Stories Tangible etc. etc - One Extra Degree

I love the watermelon story/seed story concept, but sometimes I still have kids who stare at me blankly whenever I bring it up for the first time. They look at me like I’m speaking Spanish, but I try to keep plowing ahead with the analogies and examples until they are fluent in the “writing language” …

I have found that implementing Daily Five framework to be very successful in both my kindergarten and first grade classrooms. Let me admit this, I don't do everything that the two sisters recommend. I make changes and adapt in order to make it fit for my classroom. For the past 3 years, I never gave students the opportunity to make their own choices about where to go for literacy. I, the teacher, would make the…

Great post for those who are going to start using the Daily 5 approach. She also gives a link to download her Data Reflection Charts.

F is for First Grade

I snatched up some of the cutest polka dotted metal pails last year at a hole in the wall surplus store(I'm a bit in love with polka dots). They were a couple dollars each and I thought I'd surely find a use for them. They've become gift "bags" for my teacher friends birthdays- filling them with a soda, some sweets, and little office supplies and such. Of course I saved this one for myself. It's bigger than the little ones in Target (about 6 inches tall). While I was cleaning up the house a…

Raise That Reading Stamina!

Raise That Reading Stamina!

What is stamina and how does it apply to reading you may ask? I found this anchor chart on Pinterest that's a good start. I've been reading a lot of the importance of building reading stamina in our young readers for quite some time. My interest in this topic stemmed from a discussion of a monthly data leadership team meeting in my school. We were talking about reasons why our students were not getting certain items correct on our practice standardized tests when we knew they "knew" the…
