A section of the Champlain statue in Couchiching Park, Orillia. The first planned European community in Ontario was Sainte-Marie, Jesuits mission in Huronia, erected in 1639 on the Wye River near Midland , 800 miles from Québec. After repeated Iroquois attacks the Jesuits decided to abandon the mission, and it was set afire in 1649. A replica village 'Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons' remains on the site today along with the Catholic Martyrs Shrine containing some saintly remains. Photo.L…
