Assembly & painting of the Jarvis Island beacon in 1908. Subtle differences from the one that would be built in 1935. There are more slats and they are closer together. The top is more pointed and this beacon was painted. The one in 1935 was not.
Raising the American flag on Jarvis Island. This was taken immediately after assembling the flag beacon in March of 1935. Sailors assisted the colonist's just before their departure. Some of the colonists remained until 1943, when they were evacuated due to risks from the Japanese during World War 2.
