3rd Grade Thoughts: Transition Time: Word of the Day good for classroom management during transition and build vocabulary.

Transition Time: Word of the Day

I cannot believe I haven't blogged about this before, but even if I have, here's a fun refresher & freebie :) I have a rowdy bunch this year, so a lot of my teaching involves movement, Brain Breaks and Whole Brain Teaching strategies. One thing that rates at the top of my pet peeves is when kids start to transition the second I start giving the directions. It turns into a scene of me yelling over a group of moving kids who, of course, end up asking me what to do 2 minutes later.... grr…

Word Catchers to teach Vocabulary... Fun way to get them to use their vocabulary

Word Catchers

(first post from my iPhone so we shall see what it looks like hmmm) I wanted to share this idea (evolved from Elements of Reading Vocabulary -love it). It really helps my kids understand new vocab. Each day I give each student a chance to share. "Do I have any Word Catchers today?". Their hands shoot up. When they share, they have to tell me when/where they hear/saw the word and give the word in the context in which they encountered it. This is how I keep record. You can even make it into a…

Idea for introducing math terms. this is from a K classroom but I use it in a grade 3 classroom and use as an anchor through the unit. I also make individual sheets for students to complete to add to their math notebooks - just replace the word we with I and our with our with this.

Learning activities with Fancy Nancy; making a fancy sight words wall; #kindergarten

Learning With Literature: Fancy Nancy | Creekside Learning

Welcome to our week with Fancy Nancy, one of my daughter’s favorite book characters. She loves to play dress-up, just like Nancy. The fancier, the better. So naturally, we dressed up each day before delving into our Fancy Nancy books. Some days, we even had a tea party while we read. On this particular day, we read Bonjour Butterfly while donning our fancy pink star glasses. We put a fancy tablecloth on our table and used real tea cups. The Queen Bee served snacks and even let her brothers…

Max's Words (2006) As a mentor text for teaching vocabulary and story writing, a book can’t get any better. On the NCBLA 2007 list of outstanding literature, Max’s Words introduces us to Max, a little brother without a collection. Wanting a collection like his brothers, Max begins to collect words. His collection grows and grows until he has enough for stories, and for sharing.

Max's Words|Hardcover

Max's brothers have grand collections that everyone makes a big fuss over. Benjamin collects stamps and Karl collects coins, and neither one will share

Love this idea with pics of books and vocab words from each book. Where to put it??

F is for First Grade

I snatched up some of the cutest polka dotted metal pails last year at a hole in the wall surplus store(I'm a bit in love with polka dots). They were a couple dollars each and I thought I'd surely find a use for them. They've become gift "bags" for my teacher friends birthdays- filling them with a soda, some sweets, and little office supplies and such. Of course I saved this one for myself. It's bigger than the little ones in Target (about 6 inches tall). While I was cleaning up the house a…
