10 Amazing Outdoor Art Installations: Artist Arne Quinze created this concrete and wood installation for the Flemish Parliament in I love the idea of creating a more graphic and architectural version of something natural, like a row of trees.

The new vortex-shaped, outdoor installation by architects Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues warps the flow of space with a featherweight rendition of a celestial black hole;  Constructed with tinted Mylar resembling stained glass, the vortex functions as a shade structure, swirling above the outdoor gallery.

Project firmed by Ball-Nogues, the “Maximilian’s Schell”: an impressive temporary outdoor installation in the Los Angeles exhibition space of Materials & Applications, warped the flow of space with a featherweight rendition of a celestial black hole.

Well, luckily for you (or at least New York City residents) that’s exactly what visual artist Ann Hamilton has installed at the city’s Park Avenue Armory. On display through January 6, 2013, “The Event of a Thread“ is an interactive exhibition that invites visitors to participate in the multisensory installations housed within the space, including taking a ride on the 42 swaying swings.

For those craving a bit of the ephemeral this holiday season, artist Ann Hamilton has hung 42 swings from the wrought-iron trusses at the Park Avenue Armory as part of a new installation the artist titles “the event of a thread.

Designed by Berlin interactive artists Gunnar Green and Frederic Eyl, Aperture includes dozens of tiny aperture holes that (with a slight delay) open if there is no light and closes if there is. The result is the silhouette of passersby.

Crown Fountain in Chicago's Millennium Park, designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. The fountain consists of two 50 ft glass block towers at each end of a reflecting pool. The towers project video images from a broad social spectrum of Chicago citizens.
