If dumbledor gave them points but he says something like "it has come to my attention that over the past years three brave boys have been risking everything for their friend" and then gives them the points, because there's no way dumbledor doesn't know what they were doing. And most the school is confused and don't know who he's talking about, but the marauders are all full of pride, even though they know they can't tell anyone it was them.
