Amhara family. The Amhara (Amharic: አማራ?, Ge'ez: አምሐራ) are an ethnic group inhabiting the central highlands of Ethiopia, numbering about 24 million people. According to the 2007 national census, they numbered 19,870,651, comprising 26.89% of the country's population. They speak Amharic, an Afro-Asiatic language of the Semitic branch.
