Two iconic French armchairs, the bergère (ber zher')and the fauteuil, (foe-toy) are frequently misidentified. The fauteuil is an upholstered armchair with open sides and a primarily exposed wooden frame that is often gilded or painted. The fact that it has open sides distinguishes it from the bergère which is totally enclosed. These chairs can add a sense of history and elegance to any style of room. They are as popular today as they were in stylish European homes centuries ago.

The Music Room is considered to be the most complete example of Adam’s interiors at Harewood. The circular design creates a sense of movement and melody which is enhanced by Joshua Reynold’s Mrs Hale as Euphrosyne lightly dancing into the room.

Beautifully furnished New Orleans home library by Gerrie Bremermann

The Frenchiest of French Design

If you are a longtime reader of Cote de Texas you may remember back in 2008 (sure you do!) I did a story on Gerrie Bremermann, naming her to my “Top Ten Designers” List (I never did name the last two!) While childless, they had purchased this house and hired Bremermann to decorate it, but by the time…

Eye For Design: Decorating With Antique Needlepoint/Tapestry Firescreens

Decorating With Antique Needlepoint/Tapestry Firescreens

As much a focal point as any work of art, an antique needlepoint/tapestry firescreen will dress up any room when used in front of a fireplace. These lovely pieces of furniture look as pretty today as they did when they served a very important function as a fireplace accessory. The needlepoint/tapestry firescreen began as a piece of furniture that shielded the occupants of a room from the excessive heat of the fireplace. By placing the screen in front of the fire, the heat from the fire could…
