White mull dress with yellow floral print, Danish, c. 1820. Although Danish women embraced the fashions of the French Empire, the thin fabric preferred for dresses was hardly suitable for Danish winters. A saying quickly sprang up that women "dressed in French and froze in Danish." This was no doubt also true for other less temperate climates. This dress probably belonged to Hedvig Marie West, née Schumacher.
